Visit the volcano, a sleeping giant

Visit the volcano, a sleeping giant

The active volcano has been responsible for creating, destroying, and reshaping Santorini and other islands all over the Aegean. In fact, in antiquity, it wiped out the entire Minoan civilization. The volcano is located on "Nea Kameni", an islet that faces the caldera and can only be approached by boat tour. Once there, visitors have the unique opportunity to explore an ashen land, naturally decorated with almost exclusively black and red lava stones.

From there, the world’s biggest caldera can be seen, with the famous whitewashed villages built on its top. Don't miss the hot springs! Thanks to the high temperatures of the volcano, there are hot springs where you can go swimming near the crater. The hot springs are situated in the uninhabited islet of Palea Kameni.

The water temperature reaches up to 35°C. The sulfur waters have a reddish tint and are a result of volcanic activity. The springs can only be accessed with a boat trip & tour. You will be able to swim and enjoy their therapeutic properties.

Oia, the most picturesque village

Oia, the most picturesque village

Rhenia’s Suites boasts an ideal location, right in the centre of Oia, the most picturesque village of the island. Oia perches on the sheer caldera cliffs, on the northern part of Santorini, overlooking the volcanic isles and the azure expanse of the Aegean Sea.
The village presents a distinctive traditional Cycladic character, dotted with charming white washed houses, narrow alleys, and blue-domed churches. In Oia, you will find shops, restaurants, cafes, and several historical and cultural attractions to explore, like the Maritime Museum and the remains of a Venetian fortress.
However, the highlight of your strolls to Oia will be the views of the legendary Santorini sunset; a swarm of people comes here to admire this magical event, and the whole affair becomes a joyful festivity!

The Authentic Santorini

The Authentic Santorini

Crescent-shaped Santorini (or Thira), the precious gem of the Aegean, is actually a group of islands consisting of Thira, Thirassia, Aspronissi, Palea and Nea Kameni in the southernmost part of Cyclades.

Did you know that the whole complex of Santorini islands is still an active volcano (the same as Methana, Mílos and Nisiros) and probably the only volcano in the world whose crater is in the sea? The islands that form Santorini came into existence as a result of intensive volcanic activity; twelve huge eruptions occurred, one every 20,000 years approximately, and each violent eruption caused the collapse of the volcano’s central part creating a large crater (caldera).

The volcano, however, managed to recreate itself over and over again.

Akrotiri Museum

Akrotiri Museum

Akrotiri is the most significant archaeological site of the island. The site itself including the findings were saved thanks to the volcanic materials that covered the entire island. According to archaeologists, Akrotiri was first inhabited before 4.500 B.C. It was in 1967 when professor S.Marinatos’ excavations led to the discovery of the place followed by Ch.Doumas’.
